Descendants of William Storer of Dover, New Hampshire

William Storer who married Sarah _____ is often called the son of Augustine Storre (see below) but that would seem to be impossible considering the facts of Augustine Storre/Storer's life. We know that Augustine Storre was married to Susanna Hutchinson 21 November 1623 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England (Noyes et al. p. 666) and that his widow married second Atherton Hough about 1645. Since William Storer was married by 1640 (as his son William was born 29 December 1640) and was therefore born about 1615 it is highly unlikely that he was Augustine's son, unless Augustine had a wife before Susanna Hutchinson.

A William, son of William Storer was baptized in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England on 4 September 1611. (See Wirksworth Parish Register)

"Protest 1641. Back River lot 8 in 1642, as 'Storey'. Taxed 1648 to 1658 as 'Storey'; 'widow Storie' taxed 1659. Grants are on record. Inventory entered Nov. 8, 1660, and Joseph Austin (who married his widow) was appointed administrator, June 27, 1661. Storer is believed (from tradition) to be the son of Augustine Storer, of the Exeter Combination, for whom see Wentworth Genealogy. William married, perhaps, his second wife, Sarah Starbuck, as ante." (NEHG Register, Vol. 33, pp. 98 and 99. See the quote from Noyes et al. below for a correction.)

"William, son of William Storr of Lincolnshire [the last four words handwritten over a strike-out of the original printed text]. The date of his birth at Bilsby [struck out] is uncertain, but it must have been about 1615, as he presumably married when he was about twenty, and his children began coming in 1640. He died in Dover in 1660. He came over with his father Augustine (sic) in 1636 and lived with him at Exeter." (Annals of the Storer Family, p. 18. Again, see below for a correction.)

William Storer (or Story), Dover, 1640, kept a commonplace book in which he copied a eulogy of Rev. Arthur Hildersam, an eminent Puritan preacher at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, co. Leicester. If an indication that he came from that section of England, knew Dr. Hildersam by reputation, or had sat under his preaching, the birthplace of William, son of William Storer, at Wirksworth, co. Derby, in 1611, may be promising. A page of this valuable book, giving the births of his children, is reproduced in "Annals of the Storer Family" by Dr. Malcolm Storer, 1927. At Dover, he signed the combination, had grants, and witnessed Heard's deed to Walton in March 1649-50. Clerk of the train band in 1650. As marshal, held John Crowther's goods and was allowed 5 s. by the administrators in 1652 'for his pains and service and venturing his life thereby.' Chosen commissioner 30 March 1657. Last taxed 12 October 1658. . . . Widow Storey (Sarah) in rate made 22 November 1660. Inventory 8 October 1660; administration 27 June 1661 to Samuel Austin who married the widow and took care of the estate. (Noyes et al., Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, pp. 665-666)
